Theresa Sullivan
The HOPE Foundation, Waterford
As a qualified nurse, having trained in Limerick and Great Ormond St. London, Theresa initially spent 2 ½ months working with The HOPE Foundation in Calcutta in 2003 helping to set up mobile community clinics and was one of five members of the initial clinic team. At that time, the mobile clinic team catered for as many people as they could reach, five days per week, providing essential medical services. Theresa has been actively involved with the clinics since their inception and returns to Calcutta on an ongoing basis to provide medical support where it is most needed. The clinics that she helped to establish have grown with time and now, through the HOPE primary healthcare project, cater to over 82,000 people annually. Theresa also uses her time in Calcutta to work in many HOPE partner projects and is a tremendous support and resource to the dedicated volunteer teams there. She is incredibly giving, humble, professional and considerate in all her work. At home in Ireland, she has worked tirelessly for the past 6 years promoting the organisation, fundraising and mobilising many others to follow in her footsteps to volunteer their time to work in Calcutta. Theresa has recently returned from Calcutta again to her post as a school nurse and continues to offer her time to HOPE. The HOPE Foundation is indebted to her for her generosity, continued support and willingness to keep up momentum in these difficult financial times. Theresa says, “I would like to thank the underprivileged children of Kolkata for helping me to understand the true values of life, the universal language of love and respect. The Hope Foundation provides a means for these children to be children again and builds better futures for the marginalised communities that it reaches out to”.
