Rachael Holland

Rachael HollandDublin Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (DSPCA), Dublin

Rachael has been a volunteer with the Dublin Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (DSPCA) for over 5 years and in that time has been involved in all aspects of the organisation. She helps out every Sunday and has even given up vacation time to help out the charity. The manager knows that he can always rely on her when an extra pair of hands is needed. During her time with the DSPCA, she has also helped to round up new volunteers and provide them with training. When the charity launched their new website, Rachael took on the job of weekly updates to ensure that every animal looking for a new home has a profile and photo uploaded to the website. The DSPCA relies heavily on its volunteers to ensure that it can provide ongoing support for the sick and injured animals in the Dublin area. By providing her time, Rachael has helped with the rehabilitation and rehoming of many animals over the years. She has raised awareness about the work of the DSPCA when she is “off duty” and her volunteer work is a huge part of her life now. Not a weekend goes by when she doesn’t visit the shelter, and she also volunteers her time over the Christmas and New Year holidays. She has even adopted one of the shelters residents – Zippy – a goat that was rescued from Smithfield market! He comes running down to meet her when she calls his name, as he knows she will always have a treat for him.

“I would like to thank everyone at the DSPCA, especially Jimmy Cahill, for giving me the opportunity to do something I really love and to truly understand that animals may not be our whole lives, but they help to make our lives whole.” – Rachael

I work with Rachael and not only does she volunteer at the DSPCA she also volunteers in work and is the Project Manager for the “Great Place to Work Team”. She organises quarterlies and team building events to bring IT together and has worked on many Intel Involved projects. She has also bought the team to the DSPCA in an attempt to make people aware of the shelter and help that is needed.

She is a bubbly character and deserves to win this award as she is always looking out for the needs of others.

    Good luck Rachael x

I work at Our Lady’s Hospice Dublin. The kindness that Rachael has shown to families visiting the DSPCA has been remarkable, as they were vulnerable and nervous, but Rachael was able to assist and reassure them. I know of a families over the years who have benefited from “rescuing” a pet from the animal pound for their children after having a bereavement.
when I heard of Rachael’s nomination I was delighted for a number of reasons.
    1. For the organisation – The wonderful work that the DSPCA do
    2. For Rachael Holland – She is a perfect example of a volunteer. A person
with a kindness and spirit of heart who puts spare time to the benefit of other by giving her time to meeting people and helping to save animals
    3. For the animals who are saved and protected and Rachael Holland is a great example for young people to model them selfs on. Who says young people do not give ? Rachael Holland does and is a leader in a quite way.

Rachel is just one of those people that reaches out to help others. I finished a course in June and was lucky to have Rachel in the same class. She took on the job ofthe class rep. when no one else put up their hand. Nothing was too much trouble for her and she never complained about the extra work the job involved. She even organised the social calendar! I am sure she applies the same standards to everything she does. I,m delighted she has been nominated for this award. She deserves recognition for the time she gives to others. I really really hope she is selected as volunteer of the year.
