Liam Burke

Liam BurkeConcern Worldwide, Limerick

Liam has been involved with Concern for over 20 years and his photographs have propelled the name of Concern to a global audience. Often working in difficult and challenging circumstances, Liam has helped to forge an identity for Concern as a leading international humanitarian organisation dedicated to reducing suffering and ending extreme poverty. Over two decades, often during times of major emergencies, Liam has been at the heart of frontline reporting, telling a story in pictures when words often could not suffice. His iconic photo of a malnourished young boy on the shoulders of his brother was the key image used in a major fundraising campaign for the Ethiopia crisis in 1989, helping to raise in excess of IR£1.5million for the emergency appeal at that time. Getting a story from a remote corner of the globe takes extraordinary effort, but Liam has travelled to over 16 countries in the developing world to volunteer with Concern, often making multiple trips in one year. Liam has also been instrumental in building up the photographic library in Concern, as well as encouraging and facilitating staff from his photographic agency to volunteer their services to Concern. In 1997 he created a major photographic exhibition that saw Concern’s work profiled in 30 main post offices around the country. Additionally, Liam has travelled to work as a volunteer with Concern Worldwide USA on numerous occasions, and his photographs with Concern were exhibited in New York and Chicago. He has recently returned from yet another field trip to document Concern programmes in South Sudan. Liam shies away from personal publicity but without his exceptional talents and dedication, Concern and the people they work with would be far less visible.

“My involvement with Concern was inspired by Fr. Aengus Finucane who passed away on October 6th last.  He taught me humility, hope, kindness, compassion and love with the way he helped the poorest of the poor.” – Liam
